OK, so our health plan works like this - our whole family (2 adults plus 2 kids) gets $1,500 for medical expenses for a whole year. All doctor visits are billed at the contract rate and are paid from this $1,500 pot. After that is used up, everything is out of pocket until $6,000. Keep in mind that these expenses are ON TOP of the $750/month we pay for the privledge of having this piece of crap plan.
Let me share with you how this worked out for us last year. My older daughter saw her cardiologist for a check-up regarding her congenital heart defect. They did an EKG, an echocardiogram, etc. The good news is that she had finally outgrown her pulmonary stenosis and won't need to see the cardiologist again. The bad news is that the CONTRACT rate for this office visit was $1,200. So, in one trip to the doctor, almost all of our $1,500 pot was used up.
My husband has a good job, and thank goodness because this health insurance plan costs us a fortune. At the sales pitch, the Destiny bozo told us that doctor visits would cost around $50 each (contract rate). We have YET to see a doctor visit cost anywhere near $50. In fact, my husband had his cholesterol and glucose tested and the contract rate for this was $300. Unbelieveable!
I have now found an on-line company that will only charge $45 to have a complete metabolic panel and lipid panel taken at a local laboratory. So, we won't make the mistake again of going to a lab of the doctor's choosing.
